Maryland State Police charged a Berlin man with driving under the influence after he crashed into a state trooper's car on Route 589 on Saturday morning, officials said.

Denver Alan Shoemaker, 33 of Berlin, was charged after he crashed into the rear trooper's car while the trooper was investigating a different single-vehicle crash around 12:35 a.m. Saturday, according to a state police press release.

The driver of the original crash, who was not identified, was charged with driving under the influence as well, police said.

While the trooper and suspect waited for a tow truck, Shoemaker's 1997 Chevrolet Blazer crashed into the rear of the police vehicle, which had its emergency lights on, police said.

During the course of this collision investigation, Shoemaker displayed signs of impairment and after submitting to field sobriety testing was ultimately charged, police said.

Shoemaker was processed and taken before a District Court Commissioner charged with negligent driving and DUI related offenses, and he was released on his own recognizance.

All those involved refused medical treatment. The investigation is ongoing.
